Italian American composer Gian Carlo Menotti's humorous radio opera, "The Old Maid and the Thief," stands out as one of the pioneering works crafted specifically for radio performance. 

This one-act comedic opera, revolves around Miss Todd, an old maid whose romantic prospects have been nonexistent for over four decades and her young housemaid, Laetitia, a sharp-tongued eavesdropper, anxious about the possibility of ending up an "old maid" like her employer. One afternoon, while the town's gossip, Miss Pinkerton, is visiting, a drifter named Bob arrives at Miss Todd's doorstep. Captivated by his charm, Laetitia persuades Miss Todd to allow him to stay. However, Bob's arrival coincides with a town-wide manhunt for a "thief," prompting the police to search every home for the suspect. This sets the stage for a series of comical and bewildering events at Mrs. Todd's residence, leading to an unexpected conclusion.
